In November 2008, the dream of opening a professionally staffed clinic for the Bois De Lance community became a reality. With the help of the Hope Foundation, Florida Hospital and the Cap Haitien Medical Network, resources have been provided for Open Door Clinic’s ongoing efforts. Dr. Avrius Compere, a Haitian Government Surgeon, directs the clinic and its professionally trained nurses, lab technicians and pharmacist.
The clinic currently treats over 1000 patients a month, with its services including consultation rooms, a small surgery suite, a labor and delivery room, a laboratory, a pharmacy and a nutrition/hygiene center. In 2010, the clinic plans to bring on additional staff, including a General Practitioner and another nurse. Scholarships have been provided for a young woman to attend medical school in the Dominican Republic and another to attend nursing school in Cap Haitien. Both will return to Bois De Lance to work at the clinic when their studies are complete. Dr. Jeffrey Shafer, a member of the Clinic’s Advisory Board, is serving as Open Door Clinic’s medical liaison and project consultant. Medical and Dental teams regularly visit Open Door Clinic to bring specialized care.
CURRENT NEEDS FOR THE MEDICAL CLINIC
• Funding for additional staff (General Practitioner, Nurse)
• Surgical Equipment (operating table, operating light, sterilization unit)
• Medical and Dental Mission Teams
Open Door School in Bois de Lance, Haiti
Open Door School began in 1994. A new five room school building was constructed for Open Door in 2004 by Living Hope Mission. In 2007, a Feeding Center was constructed to begin providing a nutritious meal each day for every child in the school. In 2008, a second floor was added to the school building, doubling the enrollment capacity. And in 2009, Open Door School expanded its services to include a new Primary School in the city of Hinche. Enrollment has steadily grown each year, with over 450 pre-k through grade 6 students enrolled for the 2009-2010 school year.
You may partner with us in supporting our students for Open Door’s education and feeding program for only $25 a month. (Can we have a click here button to link to the donation area?)
Open Door Trade School was launched in January 2007, offering classes in sewing, agriculture, computer and an adult literacy program.
Plans are underway to expand Open Door School in Hinche in the 2011, and eventually, to build a Secondary School for grades 7-12.
Sam’s House -
We are currently raising funds to assist an individual, Sam, who lives in Bois de Lance. He has begun construction on a house for his family that will sleep his family of nine, all in a small two room hut. He only needs $3,500 to purchase the remaining supplies and begin construction. Sam and his family are very special to us at Christian Sharing Resources because his family has acted as translators, security and in other capacities to facilitate our team’s presence in Haiti. (Or something along these lines...)
Open Door Haiti Orphanage
Widows and Orphans Project
Pastor Wiljean Compere of Open Door Ministries, with a vision to meet the already existing need, purchased land for the future site of an orphanage in 2006.
The village of Bois de Lance is situated just 15 miles outside of Haiti’s second largest city, Cap Haitien. Open Door Church in Bois de Lance is ideally suited to handle the orphan need, with a primary school, feeding center and medical clinic already existing on their ministry compound.
The Need
Prior to Haiti’s devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, the impoverished country had 380,000 orphans. This in a country of only 9 million people. With estimates well over 200,000 for those killed in the quake, those numbers will grow substantially. Will there be 50,000 more orphaned in this tragedy? 100,000? And with many of Haiti’s already established orphanages destroyed on January 12, the need for orphan care is overwhelming. The need is now.
Our Goal
The orphan crisis in Haiti is staggering. The need is now. Our time is now. We are seeking to raise $150,000 to begin Phase 1 of our Orphans & Widows Project. The construction of Open Door Children’s Home began on June 24, 2010.
Open Door Children’s Home
The Children’s Home will be built on the land that Open Door purchased in 2006. DDP Architects of Orlando are drawing up plans for the project, which initially will house 50 children, with the opportunity for future expansion of a second floor to double our orphan care capacity. The Children’s Home will have a kitchen, office, laundry, staff quarters and a large gathering room for meals, study and play.
Open Door Widow’s Village
Many widows struggle to care for their children, without employment or adequate housing. Sadly, many bring their children to orphanages, prepared to give up their child, believing that they would have a chance for a better life in an orphanage, where they would at least be fed and clothed and have a roof over their head.
Our vision is to create a Widow’s Village, where we would purchase additional land adjacent to the orphanage and build small bungalows where widows could live with their children. The women could work at the orphanage, cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and caring for the children. Their children would attend Open Door School and they would eat nutritious meals at the Children’s Home. Initial estimates for buying land and building 20 bungalows is $125,000.
Medical Clinic at Bois de Lance, Haiti
Comprised of 41 small villages with an estimated population of 20,000, Bois de Lance had only one small clinic with two auxiliary nurses (training comparable to a nurse’s aid). There were no private medical doctors practicing in the area. Many deaths from common diseases could have been prevented with proper diagnosis and treatment.
